We are very VERY new to letterboxing but...WE AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE THOUGHT YOU'VE SHARED! Some of the things you mentioned caused us to think, "hmmmmm...am I doing that?" Thanks for the seasoned insight and confirmation of things we have wondered about and the things we weren't sure if we were right about. So far we have MORE plants than FINDS!! We are addicted BAD! See you at the Viva Grand Haven Gathering! ;-D

i respectfully disagree with some of your thoughts.

agree: hand carved stamps - will not pass by store bought either, tend to base finding stamps on if it was found last

disagree: placement, ink pads, tough clues

remember, all letterboxes have different target audiences. with this said, i will find those that are able to be deciphered, able to find while keeping others, as well as myself alive, and that i am physically able to do.

Amen to that part about not wanting to chicken-scratch up the destination like a geocacher. When you get to the end of the hunt, we feel the clues should direct you to the precise location of the box. While we don't mind having to think it through (look in the spout of the teapot); we hate having to guess about what the planter might mean--near the small tree quite a while after you pass the big rock a little ways from the last trail.

Hear hear! An excellent commentary on our illustrious hobby. I remember when I did not hide boxes well in the beginning..I have definately learned a lot over the past 5 yrs. I gave up a lot of my boxes and had them adopted when I moved to CT but was disappointed when I returned a year later and virtually no maintenance had been done on my adopted boxes. I began to take ownership back and now am busy replacing lost stamps, replacing logbooks etc. A lot of work, but for the decent boxes it is worth it. For the not so decent boxes ( not the greatest of hiding spots, I mean) I just retire them. Not worth it to me to recarve a stamp more than twice.

Another comment..I know find restrictions are unpopular but I admit I use them. When I was one of the only planters in my area I didnt mind people "practicing" on my boxes. But since there are a lot of planters around me lately I have put higher find counts on my boxes and let other boxes take the early hits. Hey, it's hard to maintain over 300 boxes and I use mostly lock and locks (camoed by me) and other expensive materials, so it's definately helped. I feel like having my boxes pop up on a list after they've logged 10 or 25 finds is a nice little surprise and several people have written to me that they appreciate that. It's kind of a reward for sticking with the hobby, you know? I know I always like it when I qualify for new boxes. What say you?

Great observations, and I too have been guilty of some and have been pulling some of my boxes because of this. I especially agree with the "sticks behind the tree" thing (It seems I've been finding LOTS of these lately!). Really though, I'm a snob about a good clue and a great hand-carved stamp. It's my drug...my own little piece of crack. Hey! I admit it! :-)

Wonderful observations. I think I agree with all of them, and yes, I'm guilty of a few, as well.

Recently we've been giving these, and other points, alot more thought as we seem to find alot more poorly planted boxes and hikes. As for point 2, I think there is a linked contradiction. A 4 mile series of 4 boxes will be less popular than 4 drive-bys in the most random areas (on a map or otherwise) even if it requires driving around and about for an additional hour.

I agree with everything you said! I am also guilty of having a few neglected boxes - I don't have near as many plants as you do, but some of my far-away boxes need more attention than I'm willing to give. I've retired a couple, and there are some more on the chopping block.
